  3. Dear Joan and Colette, my thoughts are in Melbourne with you and I wish I could be there in person.

I only met Chris once but he had such a lovely presence and I had heard so much about him form Joan that I felt I knew him better than one meeting would normally allow.

Joan, little did you suspect in our carefree days together in St, Louis High School, Rathmines, Dublin in the 1950s that you would meet the love of your life and be with him for nearly 53 years! And yet it must feel now that it simply was not long enough.

The Celebration Service showed clearly how much Chris meant to so many people, defying great distance, many years and different time zones, and how deeply you and Chris felt about each other. Colette’s tribute was beautiful and he must have been so proud of the amazing young woman his little girl became.

Fom Margaret, your best friend from long ago, and her husband, Tom, who holds you in very high esteem and joins me in sending our deepest sympathy on your immense and harrowing loss.

  8. Vale Chris. I’m visualising you – quoting your friend – on that “sunlounge in the sky with a pint of milk”. What an image. Sooo pleased the “moth” you caught was your darling Joan. What a positive role-model you were for your daughter and friends. You lived such a good life – staying off the “gargle” and the ciggies and swimming in those sub-zero Irish temperatures. Your wonderful genes are very evident in your darling Colette. It was my privilege to have met you and appreciate your superior mind, with its store of literature. Mait an fear.

My deepest sympathy to Joan and Colette. Thinking of and hoping to see you soon, Marie Mc
