  3. Dear Sena Malli

We have memories – only of affectionate moments, gentleness, intellectual prowess that you left behind for us to treasure and inspire us forever

Fading away like dew in the morning.
Losing its light in the glorious sun,
Thus would we pass from earthy and its toiling,
Only remembered by what we have done

May you attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana

  4. My deepest condolences to Prof. Sena De Silva’s Family at this difficult time.

  5. Absolutely devastated by his demise. Stll firmly etched in my mind when I first met him in October 1,1964 near the College House down Thurstan Road. Our friendship started on that day as students at the University and lasted this long. Although we went our separate ways into different fields the days of the good old are remembered even now. He was a friend whom I can never ever forget, may he be blessed by God he is now in the best place where he will find Peace.

  6. I have met him several times at RIA1 when I was working there. He is such a great scientist and has had great contributions to the development of aquaculture in Vietnam and elsewhere.

  9. It is a very painful day to see the departure of a great human being – a scientist par excellence.
You will always be remembered for your humility – amply shown when we worked to uplift the scientific knowledge of rural poor in Sri Lanka in the 80’s.

  15. My condolences to all the family for your loss. He will be missed by all, and the service was a lovely tribute.

  16. I remember prof. Sena de Silva, young with a strong personality, briskly walks along the corridors of Ruhuna university, then located at Meddawatta, Matara. That was late 70s-early 80s. We were students who knew that he was a giant in academic world holding very accurate stance/values in socio-political arena as well. Feeling emotional, watched online the simple gathering paid last repects.
May he attain supreme bliss of nibbana!

  17. My heartfelt sympathies to Dinesha, Sabine, Thuy and the rest of the family. Sad as it was, thank you for the opportunity to be part of the funeral service.

  18. Sena Mama was greatly loved and admired by so many, and his life was celebrated so beautifully by his wonderful partner, children, grandchildren and extended family today. Thank you for finding a way to let us share in the ceremony. He will be remembered with so much love by so many people, as is made clear in the abundant tributes and attendance online today.

  19. Sena mama was always such an inspiring figure in our life, we loved getting to know him over the years. He was an incredibly gifted academic, and while I can’t say I understand agricultural research, I do know that what he achieved during his career (like writing a textbook!) was extremely impressive.
Sena mama was also so kind and easy to chat to about anything. He always took an interest in our lives, and our learning and careers. And amma often talked about how much love and kindness Sena mama always showed her and her family through many difficult times. Sena mama will always mean so much to our family, and we will miss him dearly.

Thuy, Sabine akki, Dinesha akki and the rest of the family, I know this must be so hard for you, and we are thinking of you all during this time. Thanks for the beautiful memorial service and for organising a way for us all to be there. Sending lots of love.

  40. Many thanks to Thuy, Sabine, Dinetia and family members for the kind invitation to join the memorial ceremony today for Sena. It was of course a very sad event, but in so many ways was also uplifting to hear the heartfelt testimonials and to reflect on his wonderful legacy; a fitting recognition of a ‘life well lived’.

On behalf of myself, my kids Matt and Jaimee, my mum Betty and the rest of the Gooley family, please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. I will miss my old mate greatly, but going forward I know I will also enjoy and take some comfort from the many great memories of my time with ‘the DG’ over the 28 years I was fortunate to have known him as my very good friend, professional colleague and mentor; a truly unique character!! 46. Our deepest sympathies to Sena’s family here and in Sri Lanka. Sena was a family friend of ours. Our families had memorable times in Warrnambool. He was one of my beloved colleagues at Deakin University. I used to go to his office for brief invogarating chats. Despite his achievements and glory, he was a down-to-earth, simple man. Sabine because you metioned cricket in your speech, I watched the 1996 Cricket world cup, ball by ball, at you home in Warrnambool. We were delighted to witness the historic win. We already miss him.
    Sam

  47. Thank you Thuy and family for sharing this sad but special time with you. Such a beautiful service. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  48. Sena was a brilliant scientist and highly esteemed work colleague at Deakin University. I was very privileged to have been his Head of School for seven years, during which time he gave me wonderful support and very wise counsel. I especially appreciated his taking me on two of his overseas trips and I was able to appreciate his huge contributions to helping develop fisheries in rural settings. I saw his astute dealings with politicians, villagers, fellow workers – many of whom he had trained. I also enjoyed watching cricket while consuming a scotch whisky! One regret I had was not being able to co-ordinate a visit to the MCG in the members to watch Sri Lanka v Australia in the Boxing Day Test!

To Sena’s entire family, my deepest sympathy.

Then you left Ruhuna by the time I join there, so, in fact the chance to get to know you more like others in my department. Although I knew you for a short time, you were always considered Ruhuna Zoology as an extended family. It is so sad you depart this world and your loving family now, but the memories of you will stay with us for ever. May you attain Nibbana dear Sir…

    1. Pl accept our deepest sympathies on your loss.We joine with his brothers in this sad departure of their brother.

  53. Prof Sena is a pioneering senior academic member of the University of Ruhuna and I have known him since the inception of University of Ruhuna in 1978. He is a good teacher, great researcher and a dedicated administrator with a clear vision. Services rendered by him to uplift the status of the Ruhuna University College initially and later University of Ruhuna are invaluable. He established the Department of Fisheries Biology in the Faculty of Science which was only one of its kind in Sri Lanka during that time. As a teacher and a research supervisor, he molded the next generation of fisheries scientists having required skills, strength and dedication to produce internationally well known scientists. For example, Prof. Sena is a DSc holder from the University of Sterling in the UK and one of his students received a DSc from the University of Bangor, UK. Receiving a DSc from a British University is not an easy task. Another example is the establishment of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences & Technology at University of Ruhuna, which was also shouldered by one of his students. Establishment of such a faculty was not an easy task, because it was an unique introduction to the Sri Lankan higher education system.
University of Ruhuna will never forget the name of Prof. Sena de Silva. May he attain the supreme bliss of Nibbana.

    1. In 1970’s, you taught, and we learned, and later we studied and worked together on various issues. One would think that’s a long way – yes, it is just over 45 years since we first met.
Last year I asked, “I am wondering whether you have time to be the external examiner for one of the doctoral students here in AIT.”. You gracefully accepted and said, “Time is no problem for me”. You keep working on. And keep fighting on as usual as you fight all “injustices” in your way. That is typical you. Goodbye Prof. Sena. As you always end our communications, I wish that “Hope all is well with you.”, wherever you go.
