Thank you Gouranga & Rumi, Terrie, Mervyn, Catherine, and Ruth. Some beautiful words from all of you and it’s inspiring to hear how dad was able to personally touch your lives. My love to you all. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Also best of fortune on your academic, but more importantly, life journeys.
As a great human being and respectful person, Alan holds an invaluable place with precious moments which we will always hold close to our heart. We will cherish this forever with unforgettable memories. For me, his towering presence, support and kindness helped me in many ways to imbibe moral boost and strength to move forward since my days as Graduate Student. Knowledge and compassion emanted from his presence as my teacher, mentor, and advisor.
We are privileged to know a person like Alan. The videos and the livestreaming service rekindled fond memories.
With deep feelings from within core of our heart at this moment, and with utmost sympathy, prayers, and thoughts for all of you, we express our sincerest condolences.
Kind regards
May God’s blessings and Peace be with us.
What a beautiful service and touching tribute to the life of a wonderful man. I will never forget Alan’s warmth, his wisdom and the things that made him unique, like his love of ginger biscuits, birds and those flip up sunglasses that impressed me so much as a child. He had an infectious love for learning and for life. My condolences to all who are grieving.
Thank you for making the service available online. It was an honour to know and learn from Alan. He was a beautiful person. Wishing the whole family grace and peace.
I always considered Alan as a Scholar and a Gentleman, and Alan was aware of my high opinion of him.
Thank you for letting me join the service and share this time with you. It was lovely to hear about Alan through his family’s eyes.
I hope you don’t mind if I share a few of my own memories.
Alan was a wonderful teacher and mentor. I will always remember Professor Powell running around the 11th floor at Monash, banging on doors, and telling Mark Horridge and anyone else who was there that Terrie had done it, she had gotten the new model to work. As a young introvert, I was horrified, but as his student I was delighted. He said and did so many things over the years that brightened my day and boosted my confidence, making me want to work even harder.
Out of my PhD cohort (who all sat on the 10th floor), I was the only one who looked forward to my weekly meetings with my supervisor. I would write pages and pages trying to explain the various models in my own words. Then I would walk into his office to see swathes of red ink all over them. We’d go through each page in detail. He’d fix my English (yes, before Alan my English was even worse), make suggestions, and sometimes he’d simply say: “that doesn’t sound right, go back and look at it again”. Of course he was right, but he’d never tell me what was wrong, just push me to question more and look deeper. I learnt so much from Alan that has helped me in both my career and in navigating life’s other challenges.
I am also grateful to Alan for introducing me to the GTAP model and to Tom Hertel. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the GTAP team and greatly appreciated Alan’s advice and support during that time. It was always a pleasure to see Alan (and Jo) at the GTAP conferences.
Finally, I consider myself fortunate to have spent time getting to know Alan better at our lunches at Shakahari while I was visiting Melbourne University. We’d chat about everything except work and economics, while enjoying the most delicious vegetarian food. It was a real treat that I always looked forward to.
I will miss him dearly and my heart goes out to Jo, his sons and daughter, and their families.
Best wishes
Terrie Walmsley
It was privilege for me to meet Alan personally for the first time in the year 2010 when me and my son, Sohom, visited Melbourne with my husband. I was hearing about Alan since I married Gouranga. And meeting him and Jo in 2010 deepened our connection. Later in the year 2013, Jo and Alan visited us in Seoul. We will always cherish the time we spent together with laughter and little jokes that Alan use to crack with my son.
Rest in peace dear Alan.
