  1. Goodbye dear friend of 50 years. I will always remember our very happy times in Holloway when we were just 21. You were one of the best buddies I ever had, and I will remember you forever. Thank you for the wonderful holiday we spent with you, Maureen and all your family in Sept 2018, we loved every minute. Sheila and I still say that it was the best holiday we have ever had and we doubt that it will ever be matched. We look all the time at the dozens and dozens of fantastic photos we have of the time we all spent together with you and the family, and we will treasure them, along with our beautiful memories, forever. Rest in peace my beautiful friend, I will miss our FaceTime chats AND YOU very much. Fondest farewell and love from Dot & Sheila. U K. XX

  2. I did not have the opportunity to know you for long, but wanted to thank you, what a lasting impression you made Doreen!
To your beautiful family, I promise to help them find the home that was meant for you all.
May you Rest In Peace knowing the world is so much better for having you in it beautiful, kind and strong lady.
Much love to Maureen, Nick and Ronan.

  3. Doreen was our tireless Leader for 20 years , who leaves behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and love. Doreen fought for some of the most vulnerable people in the Manningham community. Doreen did this With a heart full of love and changed the lives of so many that felt they had nobody in their corner. And her support to the SASSING choir will be missed.
    Condolences to all her family.

  4. Doreen inspired so many myself included. Doreen started as my manager and become my friend and mentor. I learnt to be a better person because of her. No matter where we go, we take a bit of Doreen with us. Thank you for all you have done for me, your community and family. Vale Doreen

  5. My sincere condolences to Doreen’s family, friends & her many Doncare work colleagues. Doreen will always hold a special place in my heart. Without her passion for supporting woman & survivors of domestic violence, I would not be the woman I am today. I think of Doreen every time I sing.

  6. A wise woman; a caring colleague and a beautiful supervisor who supported my through some of my biggest challenges. On behalf of the young people and families you supported; cared about and wored with – Thank you.

  7. What a woman! What a caring, compassionate and driven leader! Doreen you truly were one in a million and like so many others, I loved you. Its truly cruel that you won’t get to enjoy a long, well earned retirement with your family and that you have been taken too soon. But, what an extraordinary life and what a huge contribution you made to the people of your adopted country. I honour you today, and always. As we would say in New Zealand, a mighty Totara (tree) has fallen. Nga mihi, (thank you), and Arohanui (big love).
To Maureen, Nick, Roman and the rest of your family. my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to you all.

  8. So very sad to say goodbye to such a wonderful woman and so very sorry that Maureen, Nick, Roman and the rest of Doreen’s extended family weren’t all able to be together today to share comfort and grief as we farewelled Doreen.
I was privileged to work with Doreen at Doncare. She gave me a lot of support personally when I was going through some difficult times.
Doreen was an inspiration. I learnt such a lot from her about ethical and compassionate leadership and management combined with a driving determination for social justice.
For Doreen herself, I’m so very sorry that her time with her beautiful family, friends, colleagues and others around her was cut short.
    Vale Meredith Bubner

  9. Sending heartfelt condolences to Doreen’s family during this difficult time. May you take comfort in the happy memories and the knowledge that she loved you all dearly. It was a pleasure to be part of her Doncare team a few years back. Doreen was a true champion for those in need and will not be forgotten x

  10. What a beautiful life so passionately lived.
Your skill of making everyone feel valued was amazing. I will never forget the period I was a volunteer and then a staff member at Doncare.

    You are missed.

    Condolences to Doreen’s family

  11. Doreen you took me into your heart and I have you in mine. You took the bull by the horns and worked with love and wisdom and gentleness and righteousness and compassion. You were so proud of your 3 daughters and your grand children, and Nick and Roman. A special gentleness when you share about your “very dear Friend” Maureen. An AGM at the Veneto club was a joyous celebration with possibly one of the largest gatherings at an AGM.Truly a team player – no one left out. Presentations, acknowlegements, Laughs, good food, always looking a million dollars. you stretched the Dollars, 600 volunteers at some stages. We love you and miss you.

  12. Dearest Aunty Doreen
How foolish of us to feel we always had more time. My girls watched in awe as your peers spoke of your achievements and dedication to those in need. A life cut short, if only we had more time. I watch and listen as my girls develop into young ladies and realize they have a lot in common with their great aunty Doreen. An inspiration that will live on in all our hearts forever. We will love you always. Lee, Tanya, Talisha and Sarah. X

  13. To my incredible Aunty Doreen.
Why did it take your passing for me to find out just how much of a contribution you made to Australia?
Such a humble amazing person and I am so sorry I never took the time to find all of this out. Life is so short yet you contributed so, so much to the community and to your family.
The girls watched the service online and they were amazed at your achievements. You are an inspiration to them and me and I am so sorry I never took that extra time to know you better.
My favourite Aunty and an absolute hero to the community, especially in the fight against injustice and in the support of victims of domestic violence.
    Never forgotten. Love you x

  14. My condolences and those of Helen, to you Maureen and to your family and to the amazing breadth of people which Doreen touched. Doreen’s life and yours with her truly transcends the everyday.

  15. I had the honour and privilege of being both a contributor to fundraising for Doncare and a recipient of their help in my time of need (Doncaster Balcony Collapse). Doreen has left an imprint in my heart that will never be erased. Her presence will still be felt for generations to come as she has left such an amazing legacy! RIP to a beautiful woman.

  16. Heartfelt condolences to Maureen and to all of Doreen’s family.
It has been an immense privilege for both of us to have known Doreen over many years and admire her inspirational leadership, fearless advocacy and tireless work empowering so many children and families.
On a personal note, we will always be grateful to both Doreen and Maureen for supporting our daughter Karen, during a difficult period in her life, as her ‘aunties’, and then years later joining us at Magnetic island and being MC at Karen and Dave’s wedding.
Doreen will always be loved, missed and have a special place in our hearts.

  17. ITWas such a lovely service for DOREEN i got to learn so much about her all the wonderful things she had done, such a wonderful person, REST IN PEACE DOREEN.

  18. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Doreen’s family. May her soul rest in peace.
    Unni Vayalil

  19. Some people come into our lives for awhile, and then have to leave. Doreen from the beginning of my time volunteering in the office at Doncare, always acknowledged my presence. A smile from afar, or a passing ‘hello how are you?’ and often times a gentle hand on the shoulder. Her presence was formidable, authentic and all consuming.
She left a legacy that will remain, and I thank her for her part in my journey at Doncare.
My sincere condolences to all her beloveds.

  20. So many memories of an amazing person. I had the privilege of working with Doreen the entire time she was at Doncare. Her support, forthrightness, wicked sense of humour, and generous heart will be greatly missed. A one of a kind lady. Sincere condolences to Maureen and family.

  21. I am honoured to have known you. Thank you for your support and care and the many wonderful contributions you have made at MC Square. You are an inspiration to all women and I will never forget your vibrant smile and your endless passion for supporting the community. My sincere condolences to your family and friends.

  22. Doreen
The Doncare Depot team are eternally grateful to you especially and Bendigo Bank for the truck helping to make our job so much easier.
You were always thinking of others and supporting your volunteers.
A person of dignity integrity and humility and passionate Advocate for those in need.
A great pleasure to work for you.
    Peter and Depot team

  23. A beautiful service for a remarkable lady who was an inspiration to us all. Sincere condolences to Doreen’s family.

  24. I feel so privileged to have been assigned to work with Doreen and Maureen as Nick’s foster care worker. It must have taken all of their strength to put up with yet another young and relatively inexperienced worker entering their home! Nonetheless Doreen had the grace to allow me to play my role and showed me respect, probably above that which I deserved at the time. Doreen was a fantastic mum! I remember hearing stories about a time when Nick was very young and Doreen cuddled him to her chest over several days and nights while he recovered from illness. The bond between them was undeniable! Despite her busy professional life, Doreen always seemed to have time for her family. I remember many discussions around the kitchen table. Doreen had endless pride in all her family and always beamed as she spoke about Nick’s early development and milestones. She was also a fierce advocate and I was happy to be advocating with her and not against her! Needless to say, I learnt a great deal from Doreen and Maureen. I was also inspired by them. I hope, at least at some level, I can emulate Doreen’s passion in her work, and her dedication and love for her family!

  25. Sincerest condolences to Doreen’s close and extended family, and to the Doncare family, and the myriad of colleagues who are mourning her. I still can’t believe she is really gone from this world. Oh to hear that wonderful laugh again! Or to once more witness her righteous fury at a social injustice. I learned so much from you, dear Doreen, about leadership and love, about courage and the power of connection. Loving service was always your priority, and you tackled every challenge with a daunting eagerness. Your legacy is huge, your life-changing influence will continue to ripple through those you touched. The most true to herself person I have ever worked with. Today I have tears, but always I will have wondered memories.

  26. Dear Doreen, you left this world in a better place than you found it. Your reach and influence is immeasurable. A female leader who lived and breathed her values with heart, compassion and determination. There is no better role model. You will be missed and never forgotten. Our heart goes out to your family.

    With love Paula Piccinini

  27. What a legacy you leave behind. The world is truly a better place for all the hard work you did yourself and that will continue on due to your inspiration. I am grateful for having worked with you and in the wonderful workplace you created at Doncare.

  28. My heartfelt condolences to Maureen, Nick, Roman and all of Doreen’s family, of whom she was so proud. Doreen was always very supportive of me and encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone, for which I am grateful. She was a strong leader and advocate who was not above washing dishes after Doncare events, as she so often did. I think of her whenever I’m in my garden and see an azalea she gave me.
Doreen, thank you for all you did for me, for Doncare staff, clients and volunteers, and for the Manningham community and beyond. May you rest in peace.

  29. Dear Maureen and family. I send my deep condolences to you on losing Doreen so suddenly. I am greatly saddened that I won’t see her again and laugh and talk with meaning as we once did. The beautiful service and tributes recalled her personality and convictions so clearly; she came back to my mind in full Doreen force. I admired her when we worked together at Allambie with other dedicated and passionate people (you Maureen, Barb, Betty, Martin, Mick, Johan, Val, Margie, Aileen, John, Kerry, so many others). We were part of a driven and caring team to care for children and young people. How lucky we were to have each other in that mission. Clearly Doreen’s commitment and endeavour was life long. She led the way Amazon-style (save the bare breast!), and gave people safe and loving passage. May she have that now, and rest in peace, and in our hearts and minds. Sandra

  30. To Maureen and family l am sorry for your loss. Doreen will be greatly missed.
I haven’t had much contact with Doreen over the last couple of years but my time of being one of her managers at Doncare has left me with some very fond memories. Looking at the photos in the videos has brought back a number of those memories – one is that Doreen always had a jacket and a scarf for every situation! We both shared the love of owls and a particular wildlife painter Paul Margoscy. Doreen was a hard working and highly ethical person who was able to have a good laugh when we needed it. she was always happy to chat about her family and catch up about mine as well. I learnt a lot from Doreen and will always appreciate her guidance and support. We had good times together that made up for the difficult stuff. She had a big heart!

  31. How lucky are we to have had Doreen in our lives!

She demonstrated honesty, openness, transparency, trust and a belief in others that they could do things they didn’t think possible. For that, I will always be grateful.

Maureen, Roman, Nick, my heart goes out to you. I hope you can hold on to the many good memories you shared with her. I know she loved you very much.

  32. What an inspirational leader Doreen was at Doncare. Gone but never forgotten.
    Sincere condolences to her family.

  51. Goodbye Doreen, and thank you for all you gave me. All the strength, belief, confidence, love, loyalty, values, leadership and laughter. That was a truly wonderful tribute today and I feel so privileged to have been able to bear witness to Doreen’s life. The songs were beautiful. The personal tributes were very moving. Thank you to all who worked so hard to bring together a beautiful service to honour her. Just viewing the pictures of her over the course of her life here in Australia and especially through her incredible work at Doncare and for the Manningham community was a gift. I am in awe of her energy and commitment. Doreen taught me how to be grown up, professional and still be yourself and live your truth and speak your values always through the work. She taught me how to mentor younger professionals and how to forgive yourself for all the mistakes you will make along the way and still show up and face the challenge the job presents. Gone but never far away, and I will channel you forever Doreen. <3

  52. Doreen it was such a privilege to work under you at Doncare. Your respect and compassion for all of us and all clients shone through every part of your work and leadership. 53. I first met Doreen when we were in our 20’s – working together at Winlaton, a lifetime ago – another colleague from that time, Dinah Fawcett has also asked to be included here.
Our paths continued both personally and professionally in the decades that followed, she was a dear friend who I will forever miss, I have the memories of our lunches and dinners, shared stories, gushing over family photos and proud parent and grandparent moments.
There is no doubt Doreen was one of a kind. Her commitment to children, young people and those impacted by family violence has been reflected in so many programs she implemented and inspired and people she influenced – her legacy will live on.
My condolences to Maureen and the family, she loved and was so proud of all of you.
Sue Carlile, CEO, Family Access Network

    With love, Margaret Gibb.

  56. Thank you, Doreen, for all you did for me. Rest now and be at peace.

    To Doreen’s family:
Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about Doreen’s passing. We are here to support you in your grieving process. Please accept our sincere sympathy.

  57. I have a firm recollection from around the mid 1970s of interviewing Doreen Stoves when she was seeking employment at Winlaton Youth Training Centre in Nunawading. She would have been in her mid-twenties and freshly arrived in Australia after working in the British correctional system. She impressed as someone likely to have the necessary friendly, fair and, when necessary, firm approach likely to be of benefit to the young women in our care. We were rewarded when she commenced work as a youth officer rapidly proving her trustworthiness and dedication to advocating for and meeting their needs as they faced the disadvantages and hurdles which often peppered their pathways. As a conscientious staff member, she rose through the ranks to senior and executive roles over a period exceeding my tenure there. In the decades since, our paths have crossed directly from time to time when questions of common interest have come up and from a distance, I have observed the very significant challenges she took on in the Chief Executive roles at Allambie Reception Centre and later Doncare. Her integrity was a constant and she expanded her initial training and grounded common sense with further skill development to extend her knowledge when necessary. I am impressed by the string of civil and civic roles undertaken and awards received. Also impressive, are the words written and spoken about her contributions to community life and the remarkable family legacy she built with Maureen White who I remember well as another dedicated staff member from my stint at Allambie in the early eighties. Doreen’s contribution has been great and she would have had much more to give. Though her passing, I feel, has come too soon, she leaves many memories and benefits for those whose lives she touched. Lloyd Owen

I have valued her friendship, loyalty, shared times and bragging photos of our grandchildren and family. She was definitely one of a kind. Her commitment to and advocacy for young people, children, those impacted by family violence are legacies that have transformed lives and will live on in the programs she developed and inspired and those of us who had the good fortune to walk alongside her in some of them.
