Over 40 years ago I met a young, angry, lost boy named Gene Roberts who had not only a wonderful sense of humour but lovely smile to match. A sensitive , caring person who just needed to belong.Although many were fearful of Gene, I never was , knowing that underneath that tough exterior was a gentle soul who had struggled in his younger years and was not afraid to talk about it .After many years I was fortunate enough to make contact with Gene again and we spent hours reminiscing over the past and the people who had been with us at the time. We talked of the time that Gene had lived with my then boyfriend and I . The one thing that stood out for me was the time that Gene said to me ” I may be physically stronger than you but you are much stronger then I will ever be mentally ” Sadly today I watched as your loved ones said goodbye to you . Little did they know that I too was saying goodbye to someone who had left his mark in my life also. So I say to my friend, you are taking a lot of love with you. Rest In Peace. Nothing will ever be the same again. I’ll never get to hear one of your terrible jokes or see you make mum smile, I wish you were still here, I can’t believe you were taken to soon. I hope you looking down at us from above and that we made you proud today… till we meet again xx
