  1. Only heard today about Johns passing. I only knew him briefly but he was an inspiring individual and a lovely soul to boot. He did so much in so little time and his impact will be felt for years to come. My deepest condolences to his family. I will miss him. Nat

  2. Sending all my love to you Jo, and dearest Immy and Mia…. what a beautiful farewell you have given to your dad. Jo – I’ll always remember those evenings drinking Tasmania’s best pinot and eating big slabs of Whittakers during your stay with us, and having fun at the beach… and John making me laugh with his brilliant, British humour….. huge hugs to you all xxxxxx

  3. On behalf of everyone at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peter Mac, can I express our deepest sympathy and condolences at John’s passing to John’s family and friends.

We are heartbroken at John’s untimely departure. John was a caring doctor and a pioneering researcher in the area of radio-immunotherapy. His research over many years will help thousands of patients with prostate cancer. John will be deeply missed by his colleagues and patients alike. John’s presence brought warmth to all his colleagues and he is deeply missed at our Sunshine and Parkville Campuses, across the Peter Mac network and beyond.

From all your colleagues at Peter Mac Radiation Oncology.

    Rest in peace in John.

  5. As one of John’s PhD supervisors at the Royal Free Hospital, where he was working with Prof Richard Begent, I found him bright, funny and a joy to have around. He will be a great loss to the medical profession, and personally to all who loved him. His wonderful photographs are a worthy memento to his life.

  6. I was with John at Med school and always remember him as just a fun lively character who always had an unusual take on things .We all shared the journey from callow youths into budding doctors together.
John spoke to me for ages at our last reunion and hadn’t changed a bit. His photography is amazing and I have sent the pics on to many friends.
He definitely hadn’t become middle aged and retained his love for life and people and especially his girls.
Farewell John and thank you for enriching our lives .
    Ave Atque Vale

  9. I worked with John many years ago in Wellington. He was instrumental in the completion of my MSc and one of the best doctors I have had the privilege to work with. I have since met up with him again in Melbourne and wish our paths crossed more often.

  11. John, we will miss you very much. You have been a friend and for that we will be forever thankful. You’ve left us with a cinema of memories, but I was hoping for lots more to come. Jo, Mia and Imogen the day was a send off to be remembered. Take care. He will always be so proud.
Love Paul, Vanessa, Jack and Austin.

  12. Dear Jo, Mia and Imogen,
It was a sad privilege to be part of John’s goodbye. The presentations you put together were a wonderful reflection of him. Perfect that photographs and music were central. Music, his camera, some cheese, chorizo and a good bottle of red – we’re pretty sure that our days together in London (only every six weeks) mostly revolved around John’s pleasures. The four of us together is a time that will always be with us. The refections of his colleagues reminded us how diligent and caring John was. We will always remember John as a gentle guy who laughed easily and had a deep love for you all.
We are so sorry for your loss.
    All our love,
    Jude and Michael

  13. John was such a generous colleague and person. He was never too busy to help or share advice (even when he was, in fact, extremely busy!) and he always thought of innovative ways to get the best possible outcomes for his patients- who thought he was wonderful. As junior colleagues we all benefited from his kind words of encouragement, his lively tales of his own junior years, and his memorably brilliant teaching. Many of his pearls of wisdom have sprung to mind in the last fortnight, and we are sad that there will be no more.

His love for his daughters was so clear always and that was epitomised by today’s tributes. My condolences to his family, and thanks for letting us join today.

  14. Dear John, may you find the peace and rest and light of Grace. Prayers to your beautiful daughters; to Jo and your family and all your friends around the world. It was a privilege to have known you the last 8 years. You will be missed.

  15. Dear Jo, Mia and Imogen,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult and sad time.
We shared some good times with John and he will always be fondly remembered.
    Take care of each other.
    Love, Linda

  22. To John’s family, thank you for your wonderful tributes to his memory today. I am so sorry for your loss and grief for what could have been. He was an amazing gentleman. I first met John when we were paired together to sit the viva for the FRANZCR exams in 2012. I remember he was wearing a Dolce & Gabbana suit! I then got to know him as a colleague when I started at Petermac the next year.
It seems obvious today that his daughters have inherited some of his talent – they are a lovely tribute to their parents.
I pray that you are cared for and comforted at this time.
    Love Jacki

  23. I worked with John at Sunshine and I will never forget his warm smile, impeccable dress sense, quirky sense of humour and his way of connecting with everyone by being strikingly open and honest about everything. Seeing his girls pay such lovely tribute to him, and seeing the amazing photo montage that he put together in his lifetime, it’s clear that it was a life well lived and that he had a wondrous adventure.

  47. I worked with John at Peter Mac in the urology clinic. As an ex pat Pom too we had common ground. He was fun to work with and I will always remember his quirky style (that beautiful cord suit, his leather briefcase and fountain pen). He will be sorely missed.

  48. Dear Mia & Imi,

I don’t know whether you remember me but I came to visit your father on a Saturday morning just before the Stage 4 lockdown and we had such a lovely lunch together. We shared a mutual interest in music and I subsequently gave John a copy of a CD by my band The Dandies.

I was not able to view the whole service due to technical difficulties but I did hear your song, Mia, which had resonances of the 80’s music you used to enjoy listening to with your father. Very impressive and wonderfully unique in style. John would have been so proud.

Your father and I had not known each other for long (about 18 months), and the above mentioned occasion was the first time we socialised outside of work.

It saddens me deeply that this was our only meeting that my friendship with your father has ended before it really began. John was tremendously good company, wore his credentials lightly, and we had a range of shared interests only recently discovered.

All the best to the both of you and to your Mother.

  49. Dear Jo, Imi, Mia and Edward,
