  1. Philip was an economist to his core, who applied his keen economic insights in both the public and private sectors, as well as in academia. He thought about big ambitious ideas, and with quiet determination he made things happen. Philip was extraordinary, a truly special person, who will be greatly missed.

  2. What a beautiful service for a wonderful man whose enthusiasm for life inspired others.
A friend from school days, we later enjoyed many good times at “The Melbourne Scots” functions and at Masters Athletics.
    Sympathy to his adored family.

  3. Thank you for my being able to share your memories of Phil online. We rowed together for both Scotch and Ormond Colleges and our lives occasionally crossed in the city and as Kew residents. Phil will be much missed by the crew at the 60th anniversary of the Head of the River at Nagambie in 2026.

  4. Philip’s love and passion for his family, economics, sports and people were always evident in our chats at morning tea. We’ll miss him at Kew Uniting Church. We are thinking of Philip’s loved ones in this difficult time.

  5. Farewell Philip, you have run the race with grace and kindness. I treasure the memories of your visits to the farm at Carisbrook, your letters and notes about cattle and railways. Especially I remember your hospitality and care at Kew when I visited over a number of years, often when I was involved in Uniting Church synod and we had great conversations. Farewell.

  6. Lovely service. Loved hearing Jean talking about Philip as a boy and Jo, Tim, and Filicity talking about him as a dad. Beautiful.

  7. One of nature’s gentlemen. Fond memories of 1969 in particular as we shared a Melbourne University intervarsity rowing victory and lifelong memories of our rowing trip to Japan. More recently a trip to visit and stay with me here in Shepparton as he paid tribute to Pamela (originally a Shepparton girl) by donating a prize in her memory to her old school Shepparton High School. My deepest sympathies to all of Philip’s family and I’m so glad to have been able to witness such lovely family tributes on line. He will be greatly missed.

  8. Thank you. A most moving service, and a lovely glimpse into the life of an old mate once known an admired. I loved the sense of deep connection of your family holds. Thank you again. (Old) Rob Benson, who over a long cold winter trained to row in Japan. I wasn’t good enough for the eight, but loved rowing in the cox less pair (with no cox telling us to ‘row harder’) with my mate, Bill Magennis. Then, having reached a rowing pinnacle, I gave up and went a different direction in my life. It all, increasingly, fills me with wonder. Thank you again. A beautiful goodbye to one I will never forget.

  9. Sending all our love and support on today to you all from all at Eva Tilley. It was a pleasure to look after Dad and support you as a family.

  10. A most heartfelt and beautiful tribute to such a wonderful man aka “BFG” Big Friendly Gentle Xxx

So very touched and there with you all – especially Jo, Tim, Felicity & Sue.

What helps me is knowing that grief is love persevering.

    My love always (from SA)

  11. Farewell Philip. A moving tribute to a life well-lived.
I remember Philip for his friendship, care, and support over many years, as a school mate of my late husband Peter, and in recent years a s a neighbour and fellow Uniting Church member.

  12. Thinking of everyone in Melbourne today and sending lots of love from San Francisco. Phil was the most remarkable man and uncle, and we miss him very much – Amanda and Andrew

  13. Lots of love Uncle Phil. I am sure you are among the stars now, and I think of you when I look up at night.
Love to all of your family.
    Rebecca

  14. Thinking of the whole family today as you say farewell to Phillip / your Dad.
Best Wishes and strength for the weeks ahead.

  15. Sending all our love to your family. I will always remember your dad’s enthusiastic attitude and amazing ability to hold a vibrant conversation on absolutely any subject!

  16. WEN is devastated by the passing of Phillip. Phillip was a champion of WEN in Victoria and hugely supportive of its establishment in the early days. He was a regular member of WEN’s informal coffee catch-up series here in Victoria, and had a passion for economics that he shared with countless WEN members. You will be sorely missed Phillip! Thank you for all you contributed.
