What a wonderful ceremony of remembrance. I am Valerie’s first cousin from the Bartholomeusz line. I had a chance to meet Val only once sometime back, post Sri Lanka, although I met Aunty Iris once, ages ago in Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Thank you for such a lovely service, the memories you all shared as daughter, grand-daughter and great grand daughter. I learnt more about my cousin than my Mum would have been able to recall. I have always hated that we lived so far away, unable to share those wonderful holidays. But I am grateful to have met your Mum on my visit to Oz now 20 years ago. She came to visit me at our short let Abacus flat. We had a wonderful time together: Two cousins separated by geography and time that vanished with the first hello and hug. From your summary of her life, I see she was herself with me despite the strangeness of meeting a relative for the first time. Her warmth, her love mean the world. In our last written correspondence, she sent me a Dilmah teabag and we spoke of having tea together. We will in the presence of the Lord whom we but love and make up for the lost time on this Earth. I’m so glad that I was able to reconnect closely with your mum when we took her down memory lane to Anuradhapura a few years back. She was so much fun and Rozanne and I loved the time we spent together revisiting places from Aunty Val’s childhood.
My mum and your mum were lifelong friends and “sisters”. They stood by each other from their school days until now. Ma is literally heartbroken at the loss of her closest, closest friend.

What a beautiful service for a life well lived. I will always cherish the memories of her zest for life and the dynamic relationship she had with her beloved husband. My condolences dearest Sonalie and Michelle, and to your families as you all continue her legacy through the lessons she taught, and the vales she passed on.

Valerie was my introduction to school in the first baby class. She was very loved and respected, and a beautiful, charming and a very popular teacher. I am unwell and unable to attend today and I am very sorry about that but will be watching the video this morning.
